Rouven Schröder: Our ultimate goal is to win the league

Even though seven days have elapsed since the sensational win over St. Pauli, there is still a palpable buzz around the club. The players and staff, however, have long since turned their attention to the final game of the season. On Sunday, Schalke have the chance to win the league against Nürnberg.

A draw at the Max-Morlock-Stadion would be enough to seal the title, provided that Werder Bremen don’t beat SSV Jahn Regensburg by seven goals or more. A Schalke victory in Bavaria would, however, give The Royal Blues the championship trophy without question and this will be the aim on Sunday. “We want to win in Nürnberg and win the league. That is our ultimate goal,” explained Rouven Schröder. “We can only do that if we are focussed on the task. We have to be ambitious and greedy,” added Schröder, who is well aware of the ruthless streak within the squad. The sporting director also added that finishing first in the league table would bring financial advantages. The Knappen would be roughly one million Euros better off, which “wouldn’t be too bad,” joked Schröder.

To say that Büskens’ record of seven wins from eight games as Schalke manager isn’t “too bad” would also be an understatement. Schröder is well aware of how important the interim coach has been since taking over in March: “We have Buyo and his coaching staff to thank for what we have achieved,” said the sporting director. Next season, however, Büskens will become an assistant coach again, as has been clearly communicated from the beginning. “He didn’t want to take the job. He did it this season for the love of the club,” explained Schröder, who is certain that the 54-year-old will continue to do a “top job.”

Schröder’s work has changed in the last seven days, in that he knows what league Schalke will be in next season, meaning he will no longer have to plan for two different scenarios. The sporting director made it clear that the next steps will be taken gradually: “We have an important game on Sunday and we want to be crowned league champions and celebrate with the fans on Monday. We want to cap the season off in style and let everything out on Sunday and Monday. Everyone associated with the club deserves to be a part of that.”
