Rotherham United are set to win the race for Norwich City forward Jordan Hugill with the player expected to undergo a medical in South Yorkshire, according to Football Insider.

The 30-year-old is surplus to requirements at Carrow Road with the likes of Josh Sargent, Teemu Pukki and Adam Idah available as options for David Wagner when fit, giving others the opportunity to pounce for the forward.

Reading were the side that were first linked with a move for the experienced striker – but with Andy Carroll and Amadou Mbengue signing new deals at the Select Car Leasing Stadium – they are unable to bring anyone else in unless they offload a senior player first.

1. Who scored Rotherham's first Championship goal of the season?

Richard Wood Jamie Lindsay Conor Washington Chiedozie Ogbene

That gave the likes of Birmingham City and Derby County an opportunity to swoop in, with the former arguably in need of another forward following the departure of Jonathan Leko.

But it’s the Millers who have seemingly won the race for Hugill’s signature, with the ex-Preston North End man reportedly set to sign a three-and-a-half-year contract as he prepares to commit his long-term future to the South Yorkshire outfit.

The 30-year-old is just as he looks to re-shape his squad ahead of a potential promotion push.

Considering he’s 30 now, a three-and-a-half-year deal is quite a commitment from the Millers but that’s what it may have taken for them to win this race.

He may not have been the most prolific figure at West Bromwich Albion last season – but he has shown that he can be an asset since then with the player helping to keep Cardiff City afloat in the division.

In fairness, Hugill hasn’t exactly been a major threat in front of goal at Norwich but he has shown in the past that he can be an asset at this level and at 30, he should have at least two more years to give at this level.

He will surely be eager to make this move considering he has a decent chance of being a starter every week, with a move back up north likely to have appealed to him as approaches the latter stages of his career.

And for Rotherham, this is an excellent addition because he could potentially be a real threat in the final third like Chiedozie Ogbene has been this term, with the Norwich man’s arrival potentially boosting their chances of securing their survival.
