Rotherham United have reportedly been left shocked by the news that managerial target Mark Bonner is set to stay at Cambridge United as they had been fixed on him in their search for Paul Warne’s replacement and not seriously considered anyone else.

Warne left the Championship club after six years at the helm last week to take charge at Derby County and Bonner has emerged as the frontrunner to replace him in the last few days.

However, reports yesterday indicated that despite interviewing for the job and receiving a good offer from the Millers, the 36-year-old had decided to stay at Cambridge rather than take the reigns at the New York Stadium.

According to journalist Alan Biggs, there is a mood of real shock at Rotherham after the news of that decision.

It is understood that the Millers were fixed on him in their search for Warne’s replacement and had not considered any other candidates seriously.

Bonner has had a significant impact at The Abbey. He took Cambridge back to League One after nearly two decades away in 2020/21, led them to a mid-table finish last term, and has then seventh after 10 games this term.

The Verdict

It’s interesting to get some insight into Rotherham’s response to Mark Bonner’s reported decision to stay at Cambridge rather than take charge at the Championship club.

There’s no denying it’s a big call from the 36-year-old but perhaps he feels he’s got unfinished business at The Abbey and is in no rush to climb up the divisions.

He deserves credit for staying completely loyal to his current club, which is not something you see all that often in the EFL.

It’ll be a slight concern for Millers supporters that other candidates haven’t been seriously considered but this is a huge moment in their season and it’s important that the club now take their time to ensure they make the right decision.
