With only four shots on target all match, it was a frustrating night for the hosts, but they arguably almost created their own downfall.

Meanwhile, Steven Gerrard’s Al-Ettifaq side, featuring Jordan Henderson, Gini Wijnaldum and Demarai Gray, suggested an upset was on the cards.

Talisca thought he had opened the scoring for the hosts just before the break, but VAR caught Cristiano Ronaldo offside in the build-up and ruled the goal out.

Minutes later, the 29-year-old was handed a red card after he stuck out his arm and hit an Al-Ettifaq payer in the face.

With a man advantage, the visitors were able to hold on by the skin of their teeth with only 39% possession, yet only four shots on target wasn’t enough for a goal of their own.

As the match neared the end of regulation time more drama ensued. Ali Hazazi was sent off for Al-Ettifaq, leaving both sides down to 10 men, and tempers flared quickly.

The game went into extra time, and another big-name star not named Ronaldo ended up being the hero.

A lurking Sadio Mané in the box drilled a low cross home as Al-Nassr scrapped by into the quarter-finals.
