Ronaldo to Spurs? Levy ‘discussed’ shock move for ex-Man Utd star before Conte’s exit | OneFootball

According to reports, Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy ‘discussed’ signing Cristiano Ronaldo before the forward left Man Utd.

Ronaldo’s second spell at Manchester United got off to a bright start on a personal level as he netted 24 goals in 39 outings across all competitions during the 2021/22 campaign.

But the forward attempted to leave the club last summer after Man Utd failed to qualify for the Champions League.

Chelsea and Bayern Munich were among the clubs linked with him but Man Utd refused to let him leave at the time.

But his relationship with Erik ten Hag quickly deteriorated as the Dutchman only used the forward sparingly during the opening few months of the 2022/23 season.

It felt like only a matter of time until Ronaldo left Man Utd. His contract was due to expire at the end of this season but he left the club in December by mutual consent. This came as a result of him criticising Ten Hag, Ralf Rangnick and some of his former United teammates.

Instead of joining a club competing in the Champions League, Ronaldo penned a mega-money contract to join Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr.

Had different decisions been made, we could have seen Ronaldo play for Tottenham this season. A report from The Daily Mail has delved into ‘what Daniel Levy is really like’.

During this article, it is pointed out that Levy and Antonio Conte ‘discussed’ taking Ronaldo from Man Utd last summer.

‘In terms of his managers and his executives, Whatsapp is a preferred means of communication. Levy will often sit and chat at the coach’s table in the canteen at Spurs’ training ground.

‘Indeed it was there where he and Conte briefly discussed – and decided against – a move for Cristiano Ronaldo last year.’

Tottenham are now looking for a new permanent manager as the club’s hierarchy have parted company with Conte before his contract was up in the summer.

Cristian Stellini and Ryan Mason will lead the team until the summer and they have been tasked with trying to get Spurs into the top four.

When speaking earlier this week, Stellini insisted that his relationship with Conte is “still the same”.

“I want to clarify that the decision was taken for the best of the club and for everyone. Antonio is good. Everyone took the decision altogether for the best of the club.

“My relationship with Antonio is still the same, very close and nothing changed between us. I have to say thank you because I have improved a lot in my career under him and it’s because of him. I do the best for him before and I do the best for him until the end of the season.”

When asked if the next step for him is to become a manager, Stellini replied: “It’s the next step to work hard for the next 10 games. Nothing has to change in my mind. I’m not here for vanity. I’m here to help this club.”
