The Bianconeri went in front after just 10 minutes when Cristiano Ronaldo rose highest to head home Juan Cuadrado’s corner.

Álvaro Morata then sent Ronaldo through on goal in the 25th minute but he was brought down by goalkeeper Alessio Cragno for a penalty.

The Portuguese dusted himself off before stepping up to make it 2-0 from the spot.

Seven minutes later he completed a first half hat-trick with an emphatic finish into the top corner.

Giovanni Simeone then pulled one back for Cagliari when he poked home following Gabriele Zappa’s cross in the second half, but the hosts were unable to mount a serious comeback.

The result moves Andrea Pirlo’s side one point behind AC Milan, who face Napoli on Sunday evening.
