Romelu Lukaku has wrapped up a loan move back to Inter Milan.

Despite having completed a transfer to Chelsea to the tune of £97.5 million just 12 months ago, the Belgian striker has backed his chat and followed his heart by reuniting with the Serie A giants.

Ever since his controversial interview with Sky Italia in December, there has been a quiet feeling that Lukaku would angle for a reunion with Inter having enjoyed such a lucrative two-year spell on their books.

Lukaku returns to Inter

However, that doesn’t make it any less jarring that Chelsea have shipped out their club-record signing, who – lest we forget – was their top scorer in all competitions last season, just one year on.

But considering all the ill feeling towards Lukaku from Blues fans since he publicly flirted with Inter, the situation is arguably made all the more remarkable by the fact that so few supporters are sad to see him go.

There’s also good reason to think that Thomas Tuchel won’t be losing too much sleep about the transaction given that he used the 29-year-old so sparingly during the second-half of the season.

And in the eyes of some supporters, the relationship between Lukaku and Chelsea will only have grown more distant as a result of his first interview since reuniting with the Nerazzurri.

Lukaku gives Inter interview

Now, truth be told, Lukaku would probably have caught flack for saying just about anything during his chat with Inter’s official channels and he shouldn’t be chastised for generally expressing his love for the club.

Nevertheless, you can understand why certain comments from Lukaku might have irked Chelsea fans who feel as though the player’s heart has always been with Inter, leading to open criticism on social media.

According to Football Italia, when Lukaku was asked what prompted him to return to the San Siro so quickly, he revealed that he had been in contact with manager Simone Inzaghi throughout the 2021/22 season.

“The affection of the fans and my teammates, but also the opportunity to work with the coach,” Lukaku is quoted as saying. “I remained in contact with him throughout all of last season.

“I think the coach is doing well with the squad, so I want to contribute to doing what is best for this club.”

And another comment that caught the eyes of fans was Lukaku’s admittance that he had kept his house in Italy, explaining in the interview: “I didn’t even leave my home when I went to England, which shows how happy I am to be back here. Now I just want to see the guys on the pitch.”

Fans react on social media

You can certainly see why some fans will feel triggered by the comments, especially considering that Lukaku is still on the books at Chelsea, so be sure to check out some of the reaction below:

It’s a tricky situation, isn’t it?

Lukaku can’t win

At the end of the day, you’ve got to be selfish sometimes in life and if Lukaku has made the best decision for him and his family, then you’ve got to say ‘fair play’ to him and wish them the upmost success back at Inter.

Plus, we can’t stress enough how the fans, like ourselves, ultimately don’t know the full story behind Lukaku’s discontent at Chelsea and what might have made him so passionate about returning to Italy.

And dare we say that at the end of the day, we should be happy for another person being, well, happy.

Nevertheless, given all the tension that has already built up between Chelsea and Lukaku over the past year, we shouldn’t be surprised that some of his Inter interview comments have stirred things up on Twitter.

But regardless of where you stand on the matter, the one thing that we can all agree on is that Lukaku will have a tough, tough time readjusting to life at Stamford Bridge if he does indeed come back next summer.
