Yesterday morning’s big news in the Chelsea transfer world came from Fabrizio Romano, the king of this sort of thing.

He declared that the Blues were going to bid for Mike Maignan, the AC Milan goalkeeper who has just entered the last year of his contract. It was reported that the world class stopper had been added to our list for this summer.

Second wave pushes Blues away from potential Maignan deal

Today’s update was less positive – Romano claimed that the Blues were offering just €10m while Milan were holding out for €30m. That’s a pretty massive gap, especially when you consider the fact that Romano says we’ve put a deadline on negotiations being concluded before we decide to continue with the 4 senior goalkeepers already on our books.

Third wave claims Maresca has given personal green light

Now there’s a third wave of chatter, pushing things back in the right direction. In his column for Give Me Sport has said this evening that Enzo Maresca has given his approved the deal personally.

Romano says that while young Mike Penders is rated as a “crucial part of Chelsea’s plans”, there’s a temptation to sign veteran Maignan to help the team in the meantime.

The Italian coach has defended first choice stopper Robert Sanchez all season, but he’d be crazy not to desire an immediate upgrade like this. Maresca doesn’t have a huge say in transfer business, as we know, but his word will carry some weight, especially now as he enters his second season.

Romano insists that personal terms won’t be an issue, so really it will come down to whether those in charge of transfers are willing to find common ground with Milan and bring in a player who fans certainly feel would improve a true weak point in this team.
