Moves are being made at Chelsea right now, with a slew of players preparing to be sold as the squad undergoes its usual summer refresh.

Next on the list is Renato Veiga, who impressed in some Conference League games for us last year and earned himself a January move to Juventus on loan. He now wants to leave permanently, and Chelsea are happy to oblige, knowing they will make a big profit on the €12m they paid a year ago.

Romano insists Chelsea man “said yes” to move with talks ongoing

Fabrizio Romano on Renato Veiga’s Atletico move.

Romano says that Veiga has “said yes” to the move, and the personal terms offered. Atletico are negotiating with Chelsea right now. The Blues “insist” on a package “reaching €40m with add-ons included.”

It sounds like a lot, but given L’Equipe have claimed the Spanish side already offered €35m, we suspect we might get the whole lot in the end. And the move may be done in just a few days.

€40m windfall gives Chelsea perfect chance to upgrade

Selling Veiga for such a healthy fee should allow us to address the backup left back position he was mainly deployed in for us last season before his loan to Juventus.

We rinsed every last drop out of Marc Cucurella last season, but to expect us to be able to get that out of him again would be foolish. We will be playing even more games, at an even higher level with much more intensity, and we will be coming into the campaign with the totally unknown after effects of the Club World Cup lingering and with a World Cup to follow.

Cucurella needs to be protected far better, and that means signing a backup that Enzo Maresca really trusts to share the minutes at left back.
