Chelsea are making good progress on a lot of their major sales this summer, with half of the big 10 they were looking to move on already gone.

But there is still one potentially very profitable sale which has yet to be done, and actually hasn’t gone anywhere for a couple of weeks.

Veiga move goes quiet after strong start

Less than a month ago, the Portugal international’s move to Atletico Madrid looked like a done deal. But in the end the Spanish side ended up signing David Hancko instead, and from there things have gone very quiet, and all the wind seems to have gone out of the sails of this deal.

There was some talk (quickly quashed) that the defender might end up staying at Chelsea in the wake of Levi Colwill’s season ending injury. Apart from that, not much has changed.

There seems to be a lot of enthusiasm around the continent about Veiga as a prospect, but no really active attempts to sign him.

Veiga future “open” says top transfer insider

Fabrizio Romano’s Tweet about Renato Veiga’s future.

Now Fabrizio Romano has given an update which, while it emphasises that Veiga is going to go somewhere, it doesn’t fill us with hope that anything is actually imminent.

He claims the defender has “several clubs” chasing him, and that Borussia Dortmund are among them. However the German club feel Veiga is “expensive”, with Chelsea only interested in permanent deals and not loans.

That seems like the crux of the issue here – having come so close to getting €40m from Atletico, Chelsea are now reluctant to accept less, but getting it is perhaps proving harder than they thought.

As it stands, nothing feels imminent, and something will have to change before long or things are going to get a little nervy.
