Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Bürki has been left in no doubt about what he needs to do in order to regain his starting spot at the Westfalenstadion this season.

Bürki’s compatriot Marwin Hitz is currently flavour of the month, and interim manager Edin Terzić has clarified the situation regarding the position.

“We showed him a clear path, what we ask of him, where he has to improve,” Terzić told the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper.

“He has a clear mission that he is trying to fulfil. He is there in every training session and accelerates.”

Bürki has been with BVB since 2015, and Terzić accepts the former Switzerland international finds himself in an uncomfortable spot.

“Of course it’s not an easy situation for him,” Terzić said.

“I have spoken to him again and again. I always try to explain everything openly and honestly.

“But, of course, I can’t always be fair – that’s not possible when I work with 25 grown-up people all week and have to pick 11 on match day.”

Dortmund are reportedly keen on bringing in a new first-choice stopper in the summer, which would almost certainly spell the end of 30-year-old Bürki’s stay at the Bundesliga club.
