The idea that Roman Abramovich has been involved in peace talks between Ukraine and Russia seemed like a fantasy when it was first mentioned a few weeks ago, but since then we’ve got more and more information about it
First it was mentioned by the Ukranian president Volodymyr Zelensky, and now an exclusive in the Times has given us further details.
Hannah Lucinda Smith’s piece today reveals that the Chelsea owner had meetings with a member of Ukrainian parliament this week in Istanbul, where Abramovich is basing himself at the moment.
The oligarch has also been to Moscow and Kiev, and has met with both Zelensky and Vladimir Putin, passing messages (including a handwritten note) back and forth between them.
Talks seem to be making progress, and while no end is yet in sight, and it won’t save Abramovich’s ownership of Chelsea, it does seem he is redeeming some credit with his actions here.
