Roman Abramovich told to denounce Putin by Labour MP

Labour MP Christ Bryant, who yesterday demanded that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich’s assets be seized, today doubled down on his assertion, adding that the club owner should be making a public stand against Vladimir Putin.

The Telegraph had the MP’s full comments on the matter:

“They should be lining up in front of the TV cameras to say ‘surely to God this can’t be happening’,” Bryant said of Abramovich and Everton owner Alisher Usmanov.

“Otherwise we will conclude that they are still in hock to Putin.”

It’s a pretty useless idea – Abramovich has barely spoken a word to the press in 15 years as Chelsea owner, the idea that he’s going to break that silence to condemn his old ally and benefactor is just fanciful.

We would love to see it, but it’s just not happening.

Bryant also suggested that fans and players make gestures in support of Ukraine. There has been some talk about lighting the Wembley arch in blue and yellow ahead of Sunday’s cup final between Liverpool and Chelsea.
