We have just been reporting on the revelation of more details about Roman Abramovich’s role in peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, and now there is a story breaking about the oligarch and other members of his group suffering suspected poisoning during those those negotiations.
News website Bellingcat reported today that three members of the talks including Abramovich experienced symptoms “consistent with poisoning with chemical weapons.”
The talks had taken place in Ukrainian territory, and the group started to suffer symptoms after returning to their apartment in Kiev.
They then travelled to Lviv, Poland and then Istanbul.
Experts concluded this was “likely the result of intentional [sic] poisoning,” although it’s clear that they have all recovered fully now.
It’s not really clear who would be poisoning who here – Abramovich is a go-between, and both sides should be interested in using him to send messages. It seems more likely that Russians are trying to kill him, but it feels like they must have had better opportunities than this, given he has recently been in Moscow according to the Wall Street Journal.
