Speaking after Morocco beat Canada 2-1 to make the last 16 in Qatar, Atlas Lions defender Romain Saïss discussed the impact the Moroccan fans have been having on the team’s progress at the tournament. The 32-year-old former Wolverhampton Wanderers player explained:

“We are very proud… to think that, for 36 years, we haven’t got past the first round of a World Cup. We have such happiness and pride to see all these people happy in the stadium and in Morocco. We play football to experience moments like this and it’s even stronger when it’s your country. We don’t want to stop here. We want to continue to show that we are a good team that can do something big. I hope Moroccans are proud of us. We fight every game with our hearts and we’re proud to represent Morocco. We’ve appreciated all the love the fans send us before each match and at the stadium, they’ve managed to push us on when we were struggling. If they continue like this, we will go even further.”
