Artem Dovbyk hasn’t had an easy maiden campaign in Italy, but he’s fixing his numbers by scoring with regularity in the recent Roma fixtures. He hasn’t won over the fans yet, perhaps for his lack of emotion and up-and-down performances, La Gazzetta dello Sport relays.
The 11 Serie A goals netted by the Ukrainian marksman have brought 11 points to his team. He ranks third in the chart for most decisive players, trailing Moise Kean and Lorenzo Lucca. He has added five in the other competitions. Only Tammy Abraham and Borja Mayoral have exceeded the double-digit threshold in their first season with the Giallorossi since 2000.
Dovbyk was key in the wins over Udinese, Como, Cagliari, and Lecce, which are fueling the Roma hopes of making the top four despite a very poor start. On the other hand, he has yet to show up in big games. He’ll have another opportunity to do so against Juventus in the next round.
Claudio Ranieri defended the striker after the last match.
“We have to consider that he wakes up every day without knowing whether his family is alive. We can’t even imagine what’s going through his mind. We’re trying to do whatever we can to make him feel comfortable and are starting to feed him better.”
The center-forward needs a few more goals to surpass what Romelu Lukaku did last year, who scored 21 goals in 47 appearances.
His numbers are still lacking considering how much they paid for him, but his adaptation to Serie A started really only in January given the utter confusion that reigned in the team in the first few months.
