West Ham United misfit Gianluca Scamacca is desperate to return to his boyhood club Roma following an underwhelming episode in the Premier League.

But the Italians’ initial attempt to rescue their homegrown star from his London nightmare failed to impress the Hammers, forcing the Giallorossi to review their approach.

According to Calciomercato, Roma chief executive Tiago Pinto has drawn up a new bid to convince West Ham to let the 24-year-old revive his association with the defeated Europa League finalists.

The new offer won’t differ much from the Serie A club’s first approach as they only want Scamacca on loan, even though the Londoners remain hopeful of offloading their expensive flop straight away.

The Hammers forked out upwards of £35 million, including add-ons, to win the race for the striker’s signature last summer, hoping he could address their scoring problems.

However, the move hasn’t worked out as Scamacca only made 16 Premier League appearances last season, spending most of the campaign as second fiddle to standout forward Michail Antonio.

With the 2024 European Championship coming up next summer, the Italy international is keen to secure regular first-team football to boost his chances of making Roberto Mancini’s squad.

Scamacca has attracted interest from AC Milan, who are on the hunt for Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s heir, but he’s only willing to rejoin Roma to replace injured Tammy Abraham.

The player’s wish matters, although it’s not decisive, considering Roma have been unable to piece together a satisfying offer that would tempt West Ham to sanction a move.

While they insist on taking Scamacca on loan with an option to buy, the reigning Europa Conference League holders are adamant their out-of-favour frontman can only leave with a mandatory buyout clause.

Jose Mourinho grasps the significance of landing a new striker in light of Abraham’s nasty ACL problem, especially following Andrea Belotti’s woeful first season at the Stadio Olimpico.

The former Torino man failed to find the net in any of his 31 Serie A appearances last term.
