Italy’s Giudice Sportivo have punished Roma with a 3-0 loss for their opening game of the season due to fielding an ineligible player.
The game against Hellas Verona on Saturday night ended in a 0-0 draw but that result has now been changed.
Roma instead have been hit with a 3-0 defeat due to playing Amadou Diawara who was not available for selection.
That is due to the fact that he was mistakenly placed in the Under-22 player section of their 25-man squad for the fixture.
Diawara turned 23 in July and should have instead been entered into the senior section of the Giallorossi’s squad list.
There was precedent for this four years ago when Pescara were awarded a 3-0 win against Sassuolo, who had made a similar error involving Antonio Ragusa.
Roma are set to lodge an instant appeal as they believe the error was made and good faith and there was no malicious intent on their part.
