One of Roma’s top priorities for the January transfer window is acquiring a new defensively minded midfielder.

Manager José Mourinho wants a player who can rotate with current first choice midfield duo Jordan Veretout and Bryan Cristante.

Several players have been linked to the Giallorossi, but Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Denis Zakaria remains at the top of the club’s wish list. The capital club unsuccessfully attempted to purchase the Swiss international over the summer, but were rebuffed by the German side.

Although disappointed they couldn’t agree to a deal, Roma’s interest in Zakaria hasn’t waned and they remain keen on bringing him to the Eternal City.

Tuttomercatoweb writes that Roma and Borussia Mönchengladbach are engaged in negotiations as the German side do not want to lose Zakaria for zero.

The clubs still haven’t reached an agreement, but the German side’s sporting director, Max Eberl, would reportedly be willing to accept an offer worth €5-€6 million plus a large sell-on percentage.
