Roma coach Jose Mourinho was extremely disappointed following the 3-2 derby loss to Lazio last night.

Speaking in an interview with Italian broadcaster DAZN (via LazioNews24) after the game, the 58-year-old Portuguese coach discussed the Derby della Capitale, his team’s performance and the impact of the referee Marco Guida.

Italian soccer has football so much in quality, it’s an offensive game, teams have the desire to win. This is a fantastic match, the referee and VAR had no dimension.  Look at Lazio’s second goal, it could have been 1-1, the referee got it wrong. The second yellow to Leiva was also missing. Similar situations to those of Pellegrini.  My players were the best on the field. When you go down by three goals something is wrong, we played and dominated, I saw Lazio in difficulty.  They managed the last few minutes as they wanted and the referee allowed them to do so.

The Roma coach highlighted that he was not worried following the Giallorossi’s 3-2 loss to Lazio.

No, I’m not. I would be worried if we didn’t try to win the game or if Lazio dominated us from the first to the last minute.  The second and third goals are counter attacks and a losing team has to take chances like we did.  After a game like that, you want to talk about football and not referees, even here in Italy you are changing.  We knew that they do things like Milinkovic-Savic’s movement, we left too much space in the centre and he has this quality to get in the area.  However, we reacted the way I like, forgetting the result and trying to react.

He touched on the performance of talisman forward Nicolo Zaniolo, who was denied by Lazio goalkeeper Pepe Reina on a number of occasions.

He made a few mistakes, but a great game.  He had chances in which he destroyed the opponents, it’s a shame this fatigue didn’t allow him to finish the match.

Finally, Mourinho spoke about his attitude following the disappointing Derby della Capitale result.

We are always calm, beyond the result. But we have never been in difficulty. Maybe ten minutes. We knew that in transition they could hurt us, but we had to take some risks.  We deserved a different result, the referee was decisive.

Roma now sit fourth in the Serie A table after the opening six games, sitting on 12 points. They are one point ahead of rivals Lazio and are tied on points with fifth place Fiorentina.

Their next game of the season is against Zorya Luhansk in the UEFA Conference League, before facing Empoli on the weekend.
