Roma are making progress in their efforts to acquire the services of Alvaro Odriozola, according to Calciomercato.

Representatives of Odriozola recently met with the Roma hierarchy over a loan deal with an option to buy and the Spaniard would be happy to link up with Jose Mourinho at Stadio Olimpico.

Having returned to Real Madrid from his loan spell at Fiorentina last season where he played 27 times across all competitions, Odriozola is yet to feature for Los Blancos this term with Carlo Ancelotti sticking with Daniel Carvajal at right-back.

In the absence of the aforementioned Carvajal, Lucas Vazquez has often got the nod, leaving Odriozola with no chance of making a first-team appearance at Santiago Bernabeu anytime soon.

With Odriozola’s current deal due to expire in 2024, Madrid are running out of time to recoup a significant portion of the €30 million fee they forked out to land him from Real Sociedad five years ago.

A return to Italian football, albeit on a permanent basis this time around, could help reignite the defender’s career off the back of a stagnant couple of seasons for a player who showed so much promise and potential in his early days.

Following Jose Mourinho’s recent fallout with Rick Karsdorp just before the World Cup, Roma are expected to be in the market for a new right-back to help provide competition for Zeki Celik when the transfer window reopens in January.

The Giallorossi are currently on a winter tour to Japan, where they have failed to win any of their two matches.

Roma were held to a 0-0 stalemate against Nagoya Grampus Eight on Friday before playing out a thrilling 3-3 draw against Yokohama Marinos three days later.
