Speaking to Bild, after Borussia Mönchengladbach’s general meeting on Monday, sporting director Roland Virkus continued to back head coach Gerardo Seoane.

When asked about the coach, Virkus said: “Gerardo is a very good developer and communicator. He is ready to work with less purchased quality, but with a lot of potential. Gerardo is a talent promoter who is committed to the Borussia Way. We are already the fourth youngest team in the league this season. We will continue to advance this development under Gerardo. He brings everything to achieve the goals with our team.”

It has been ruled out that Gladbach will follow the trend of the past few seasons and sack Seoane at the end of hte seaon, similar to what has happened to Adi Hütter and Daniel Farke. Rescently the Swiss has recieved criticism as the team let themselves get sucked into the relegation battle, which they are still not safe from. This has meant that the goal this season is to retain their Bundesliga status.

Also at the general meeting, Virkus addressed what he believes is one of the issues at the club:  “A huge challenge is the topic of leadership. With our means, however, it is hardly possible to get a leader from the outside who works immediately. We constantly check the market. But first and foremost, we have to develop these players from our squad ourselves, who are taking on more and more responsibility. And thus strengthen the team’s internal hierarchy. There is also a lot of potential in the team.”

In the past 18 months, Gladbach have lost a host of key players including leaders Lars Stindl, Yann Sommer and Jonas Hofmann and this has left a team that has no stand out leaders in the squad and this has become increasingly obvious as the season has progressed.

This summer will be key for Gladbach when it comes to transfer market buisness. If they are not able to improve the squad then they will likely once again find themselves in a battle for survival.
