In an interview with club media, Borussia Mönchengladbach sporting director Roland Virkus has confirmed that Marcus Thuram and Ramy Bensebaini will both leave the club at the end of the season.

When asked about the future of the two, Virkus said: “We were in open exchange with both players and knew the current status. It is a pity that they will not renew their expiring contracts because both of us have given us a lot of sports in the past four years. And we also understand that our fans are disappointed that the two don’t stay. However, in recent years, it has always been part of our way to get such talented players, to develop them further – and to let them go at some point because we can’t keep them forever. Ideally, we will achieve an attractive transfer with these transfers. Of course, it is not good that this is not the case. But: Both boys are players who can make the difference. Both have helped us in sports in recent years and are still doing so at the moment. Therefore, despite all justified disappointment, they deserve a stylish farewell.”

Bensebaini is set to join Borussia Dortmund once his contract expires. His departure will bring an end to his four-year stay at the club after joining from Rennes for €8m in 2019. This season has been Bensebaini’s best goalscoring wise having scored six times for Gladbach however, at times he has been very inconsistent in his performances and since the World Cup has been poor.

Thuram will also bring to an end his four-year stay at the club. The 25-year-old’s future is not yet decided but he is aiming for a move to a top European club as Sky Germany reports. Thuram joined Gladach in 2019 from Guingamp for €9m.

His form this season has seen him earn a call-up to the France World Cup squad where he impressed in his cameos off of the bench. While for Gladbach he is experiencing his best season as so far he has scored 13 goals in the Bundesliga and is joint second in the goalscoring charts, three goals behind Werder Bremen’s Niclas Füllkrug.

The announcement that Thuram and Bensebaini will leave comes a day after club captain Lars Stindl also announced that he will not be extending his contract and will leave in the summer.
