Rogério Ceni wants Flamengo to impose their style on Palmeiras in Sunday’s Supercopa do Brasil.

The defending Brasileirão champions are top of the Campeonato Carioca standings, but facing Palmeiras (who won both the Copa do Brasil and the Copa Libertadores last season) will be a much different proposition.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Flamengo manaher Ceni said: “Obviously, they are different championships, different teams.

“But we will try to propose our style of play, try to overpower the opponent. The difference is that you play against Palmeiras, who is one of the great champions of last year.”

Ceni was asked about Willian Arão’s recent redeployment to central defensive duties, which has made space in the middle of the park for veteran playmaker Diego.

“Both Arão and Diego are highly technical players, with a good read on the game. I don’t attach much of the name of the athlete to the role,” the former Brazil international goalkeeper said.

“For me, it is enough that he performs it. In football, so many defensive midfielders have become defenders, defensive midfielders for the defense.

“For me, what matters is the player to be good. In quality and competitiveness. Desire for title, desire for victory. That’s what I find in this group.”

Flamengo will be hoping to retain the trophy they won in 2020 in what is only the fourth year the fixture is being played.
