On Thursday evening, Flamengo were handed their biggest shock defeat in quite some time, falling to second-division rivals Vasco 3-1 in Campeonato Carioca play.

The Rubro-Negro were only saved from complete embarrassment by a late Vitinho strike.

After the match, manager Rogério Ceni blasted his side’s lack of effort and said they were far behind Vasco in the technical aspect of the game, despite playing an extremely strong XI.

“We had technical errors, plain and simple,” Rogério Ceni said in his post-match press conference. We surrendered a goal in the first five minutes, this time a set piece, something we work on.

“Unfortunately, we were unable to do well in that sense. The team fought, battled, but technically the team was not good. Despite creating good chances, technically we didn’t develop what we practised during the week.

“ The early goal was very disruptive and we have to highlight Vasco’s defensive unit, which performed well. They cut down our lines and competed a lot. We have to value the opponent’s dedication.

“We have to understand that we need to improve. The game was far below what everyone expected.

“Argentine teams are also very competitive, as was Vasco. We need to find the spaces, analyze the videos, and see the errors, which I found very identifiable.”

Flamengo will take on Portuguesa on Saturday before they take on Argentine outfit Vélez Sarsfield in Copa Libertadores play on Tuesday.
