Flamengo have confirmed that Rodrigo Caio underwent minor surgery as part of treatment for a knee infection the defender picked up on holiday.
The centre-back has been hospitalised since last Sunday, with the club breaking their silence on the matter on Saturday.
Dr Márcio Tannure heads up the Rubro-Negro’s medical department, and a verbal statement from him was released on the club’s social media accounts.
In it, Tannure said: “Athlete Rodrigo Caio performed a surgical arthroscopy on his right knee on January 8, 2022.
“It was already pre-scheduled and it occurred without any complications.
“During the vacation period, the athlete reported an infection in one of the points and was instructed to guide him to Rio de Janeiro.
“It was decided to hospitalise the athlete so that he could undergo intravenous antibiotic treatment in order to have the best result.
“Today, a new procedure was carried out so that we can see exactly the effectiveness of the treatment through the culture of this material, and this result should come out in around three to five days.”
All going well, Caio is expected to recover from the issue in about 10 days.
