Flamengo have confirmed that Internacional will not take up their option to buy Rodinei when his loan deal expires at the end of May.
The right-back has been with the Colorado since the end of 2019, making 40 appearances and scoring one goal (via Transfermarkt).
Despite his impressive form at Beira Rio Stadium, Inter do not have the financial wherewithal to pay the agreed €4m for the 29-year-old.
Speaking to the O Dia newspaper, Flamengo’s Luiz Eduardo Baptista confirmed Rodinei’s imminent return to the Rubro-Negro.
“Rodinei is a great player. It is an asset of Flamengo,” the club’s vice-president of external relations said.
“It has a very clear clause with the option to buy. Inter have already said that they are unable to pay the expected amount. That way, at the end of May he will return to Flamengo.”
Rodinei was controversially sent off when the two teams met in February in what was their penultimate game of last season’s Brasileirão.
Inter’s 2-1 defeat on the day handed Flamengo the advantage in a nail-biting title race, which they managed to hold on to after a dramatic final day of action.
