Brendan Rodgers has suggested he wasn’t given sufficient backing in the transfer market during his time as Liverpool manager.

The Northern Irishman has impressed since returning to the Premier League with Leicester in February, overseeing the club’s impressive start to the new season which has seen the Foxes rise to second and boast the best defensive record in the division, conceding just eight times so far this season.

Rodgers spent just over three years in charge at Liverpool between 2012 and 2015, coming close to ending the club’s long wait for a league title with a free-scoring side possessing the likes of Luis Suarez and Raheem Sterling.

He would ultimately be sacked by the club and replaced by Jurgen Klopp, though Rodgers has seemingly taken a swipe at the club’s owners for failing to provide significant defensive reinforcements, pointing to his record at both Celtic and Leicester as proof of his ability to build a well-rounded side.

“I think if you look when I was in Scotland we had defensive records as well,” Rodgers told a press conference.

“At Liverpool of course we were very good going forward, you have to ask did I have the players to defend how we’d want to defend? I think now at Liverpool they obviously invest a lot of money to get those types of players in.

“Here I’ve got a top-level centre-half in Jonny Evans, a young player in Caglar [Soyuncu] beside him who’s amazing. We’ve got a top European goalkeeper.”
