Eintracht Frankfurt head coach Dino Toppmöller has named defender Robin Koch his new squad captain. Koch will replace keeper Kevin Trapp, who will be switching to Paris FC ahead of the new season. Koch’s elevation was confirmed shortly before his Bundesliga outfit kicked off competitive play in the DFB Pokal on Sunday. The club didn’t provide any further details on the state of the team leadership council.
The German national team defender made for an obvious choice to replace Trapp, given that the 29-year-old led in Trapp’s absence for the SGE last spring. Koch has already donned the captain’s armband 16 times, including during several crucial Europa League fixtures last season. The Kaiserslautern-native recently extended his Frankfurt contract this summer despite interest from other clubs.
“Robin is an absolute top performer and a leader,” Toppmöller’s club-released statement read, “He is an undisputed regular and plays a central role on the pitch. That’s why he’s the best possible captain for me.“
“This is a great and special honor,” Koch added in his own statement. “I want to fulfill this role with everything I have and lead our team to further success.“
