Wingback Robin Gosens has the quality to make Inter’s left flank his own next season, but will not do so as the same kind of player as the man he replaces in Ivan Perisic.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who argue that the 28-year-old must have the left side of the team built in a different way than it had been around Perisic.

Perisic had arguably been Inter’s outstanding player last season, with the Croat’s combination of physicality and technical ability allowing him to exert significant influence on all phases of play.

Gosens, on the other hand, is more of a pure wingback than Perisic, with similar stamina and more explosive athleticism but not quite the technical finesse that the Croat had always shown.

The German’s role in Atalanta showed both how tactically useful and devastating in the final third he can be in Serie A, but if Inter are to get the best out of him next season they cannot try to simply use him as they used Perisic.
