Chivas winger Roberto ‘Piojo’ Alvarado has revealed how close he was to joining Liga MX rivals Club América.
Piojo swapped Cruz Azul for Chivas earlier this year although originally he had no intentions of departing Los Celestes.
“At first I didn’t want to leave,” the 23-year-old said appearing on the podcast Disfruta el Viaje.
“I became very fond of the team so at first I wasn’t interested in leaving but I thought about it and spoke with my wife.
“We agreed that my time with Cruz Azul had ended and that going elsewhere whould be best the best deicison, then Chivas came along and I said yes.”
Piojo spent some time on trial with Manchester City when he was 16-year-old and has said the defending English champions wanted him to join Las Águilas – but a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ with his then team, Celaya, blocked the move.
“Manchester City told me that I was going to join Club América’s U20s as they had a good relationship with them,” the Mexican winger explained.
“When I returned some people from the Celaya board quoted me and since the owners had changed they told me I had to keep my word. In the end I had to stay in Celaya.”
Piojo would end up leaving Los Toros a year later, joining Pachuca in 2017. The winger has made five appearances for the Rebaño Sagrado so far in Liga Mx Clausura registering one assist.
