Former Italy head coach Roberto Mancini has officially taken the reins of Saudi Arabia’s national team.

The 58-year-old ended a five-year spell in charge of his homeland earlier this month ahead of switching international allegiances.

But the former Manchester City and Inter manager becomes the latest high-profile name to move to Saudi’s growing football scene.

“I firmly believe that the passionate footballing culture of Saudi Arabia and the intrinsic quality of Saudi players are crucial ingredients for success,” said Mancini.

“The whole world recognises the enormous potential of the Saudi Arabia national team during their outstanding performance at the World Cup.

“We have the potential to improve further. The squad is strong with talented players. I believe we have what it takes to elevate our game if we work hard.”

Mancini’s first game in charge of the Green Falcons will be against Costa Rica on 8 September as part of a double-header of friendlies.
