Inquests have been held following Liverpool’s shock 7-2 thrashing at the hands of Aston Villa last Sunday, and one of the heads on the chopping block was Roberto Firmino’s.
The 29-year-old, like nearly every other player, had a poor day in Birmingham and it’s led to deeper scrutiny about whether his place in the team is as secure as it has been in the past.
The arrival of Diogo Jota and improvement of Takumi Minamino means that for the first time since 2016, Firmino’s place in the Liverpool starting 11 is under threat.
Firmino has only scored one goal for the Premier League champions since football resumed post-lockdown, and has yet to find the net so far in the 2020/21 campaign.
However, his performance for Brazil in their 5-0 win over Bolivia on Saturday could be a sign that the forward is back in form.
Firmino struck twice as Tite’s side got their World Cup qualifying campaign off to the perfect start.
Liverpool supporters will be hoping the real Bobby is back.
