According to a report by L’Équipe, Roberto De Zerbi was “particularly involved” in the recruitment of Mason Greenwood (22) and Jonathan Rowe (21). The two wingers joined De Zerbi in arriving from an English club this summer
The French outlet writes that De Zerbi had regular exchanges with Greenwood ahead of his controversial move from Manchester United. The Italian manager reportedly used a variety of arguments to persuade the forward to join the club including “tactical as well as psychological” reasons
De Zerbi has previously pointed out in an interview with L’Équipe that Greenwood was the first player that he called as manager of Marseille, while the ex-United player has highlighted the role that the former Brighton & Hove head coach had in convincing him to join during his first press conference with the club.
De Zerbi was also active in bringing in Rowe from Norwich City. The winger was reportedly a key target for the Marseille head coach, and this is thought to be the reason why Les Phocéens were so keen to secure his signature.
