Roberto De Zerbi on Mason Greenwood – ‘I expect more from him’

Mason Greenwood (23) was one of the league’s standout players in the early months of his life at Olympique de Marseille. After 24 matches, the Englishman is having one of his personal best seasons after scoring 15 goals. Recently, Greenwood has been far less influential in OM’s general play, but has been steadily notching in the goals along the way. Perhaps the mark of a repositioning by Roberto De Zerbi, Greenwood has been less involved in defensive duties in order to roam forward – but his manager thinks he can provide a lot more.Speaking at a press conference attended by Get French Football News ahead of Marseille’s Ligue 1 encounter this weekend against Racing Club de Lens, De Zerbi once again stated that he believed in Greenwood’s potential, but that he expects more of him.“I wanted him here, I said it over and over again. He was the first player I contacted, even before I signed for OM. I had already spoken to his father. No one can have more respect for him than I do,” said De Zerbi on the signing of Greenwood at Marseille.“But that doesn’t change anything: I expect more from him. He has to do more, because what he is currently showing is not enough. If he wants to achieve his ambition of becoming a champion, he has to be more consistent, sacrifice more and be more determined.”“Otherwise, we as a ream always fall back into the same pattern: a very good match, then a defeat at Auxerre, then a victory against Nantes… It’s too irregular, it’s like waves. And that’s something I don’t like.”The Englishman joined the club this summer from Manchester United in a deal worth around €31.5m and was one of the league’s best attacking players at the beginning of the season.

The former Red Devil has been rejuvenating his career at the Stade Vélodrome since his departure from England. The striker was charged with in 2022 with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault. He was subsequently frozen out at Manchester United and spent the following season on loan at Getafe. All charges have since been discontinued with the player in question denying all allegations.GFFN | George Boxall – Reporting from La Commanderie, Marseille.
