We could wax lyrical about Roberto Carlos all day.

The Brazilian legend well and truly revolutionised the left-back position throughout his illustrious career, particularly at Real Madrid.

Carlos spent 11 years in the Spanish capital after an underwhelming 1995/96 season at Inter Milan and the numbers he produced for Los Blancos are befitting of a high-quality winger, not a defender.

In 527 games for Real Madrid, the man who possessed the biggest thighs football has ever seen scored 70 goals and assisted a further 89.

Those figures are exceptional and the fact Carlos was very good at the pragmatic side of the game as well made him an absolute nightmare to come up against.

And let's not forget how skilful 'The Bullet Man' was.

Carlos was essentially the Ronaldinho of left-backs and that was something he made clear to the entire world as recently as 2019.

The 48-year-old was selected to represent the World XI in the bi-annual Soccer Aid charity event two years ago and the 2002 World Cup winner certainly made an impact.

At one point in the match, Carlos wowed fans by producing an insane scorpion pass, which landed right at the feet of Arsenal legend Robert Pires.

The ball was at a very awkward height and behind Carlos, but he still managed to find a teammate in the most stylish way possible.

Carlos really was a trendsetter and a few others have managed to follow in his footsteps by operating as full-backs while also playing a crowd-pleasing brand of football.

Fellow Brazilians Marcelo and Dani Alves have certainly done just that, with both also scoring and assisting goals at a similar rate to that of their predecessor.
