Robert Lewandowski has equalled Gerd Müller’s single-season Bundesliga scoring record after scoring a penalty against SC Freiburg on Saturday.
The Bayern Munich man’s hopes of surpassing ‘Der Bomber’ took a huge hit last month when he was sidelined through injury.
But Lewandowski has wasted no time upon his return to action.
His hat-trick against Borussia Mönchengladbach last Saturday put him one goal shy of equalling Müller’s record of 40 goals in a single season that came in the 1971/72 campaign.
Lewandowski’s opener against Freiburg means he has now equalled the tally, cementing himself as one of the best scorers in the history of the competition.
After the match, the centre-forward took to Twitter to share how proud he was to achieve a goal “that once seemed impossible to imagine.”
Another goal against Augsburg on 22 May could see Lewandowski claim the sole possession of the feat for himself.
