Prior to the World Cup, Robert Lewandowski’s desire to leave Bayern Munich was made public.

Yet here we are, just over a week before the transfer window closes, and Lewandowski is still with the Bundesliga champions.

In an interview with SportBild, the 30-year-old has explained why he wanted to leave Bayern and what has changed over the last two months.

“In April and May everyone criticised me. And I felt no protection from the club, I felt alone,” the Pole said.

“Neither of the club bosses defended me. I did not feel good in Munich at that moment. Being at Bayern did not fit for me at that time.”

Lewandowski has scored 155 times in 197 appearances for Bayern since joining from Borussia Dortmund four years ago.

Those goals have contributed to four Bundesliga titles and one DFB Pokal but for some it isn’t enough. Bayern have failed to reach the Champions League final since 2013 and Lewandowski has often been blamed.

That happened again last year, when the striker failed to score in a semi-final exit against Real Madrid. However, Lewandowski claims support from the fans and talks with new boss Nico Kovač have now convinced him to stay at the Allianz Arena.

“I noticed that in Munich the fans support me. I realised that they still want me here. I will never strike, never mess with the club. I’m not wasting any thought on another club now.”

Lewandowski had been linked with Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and a whole host of Premier League clubs.

Instead, though, he will head into a fifth season as a Bayern player with plenty still to prove.
