Derby County are in need of a modern day miracle to avoid relegation to League One this season with a points deduction set to be finalised and the club put into administration.

Former striker Robert Earnshaw gave his thoughts on the situation on the 72+ podcast.

He said: “A lot of the damage has been done over the last three to four years, rather than over the last short period, I think that’s the problem with Derby County.”

A lot of great Football League clubs have been through the ringer in recent years and sadly Derby County are the next one, just over two seasons after reaching the Championship play-off final the club are staring down the barrel of relegation to the third tier with even more concerning issues off the pitch than relegation.

Mel Morris has overseen successful times at Pride Park, so this situation is very different from the demise of Wigan Athletic and Charlton Athletic in recent years but is just as serious at the current time.

Earnshaw is correct to point out that this situation does not come as a surprise and has been brewing in the background for a few years.

Hopefully, a new buyer can arrive in the coming weeks and the club will have a clear future pathway, they do not want to be selling their precocious young talents at a cut price in January, such that happened at Wigan Athletic recently.
