Robbie Savage believes Leeds United secured a bargain when they signed midfielder Ethan Ampadu from Premier League side Chelsea in the summer.
Leeds were relegated to the Championship at the end of last season, and that meant the club was in disarray on and off the football pitch.
After a long process, Leeds decided to hand the managerial role to Daniel Farke, and it was his job to get a competitive squad together that could compete in the second tier and win promotion back to the top flight.
The Leeds boss was able to bring in nine new arrivals in the summer, and one of them was Ampadu, who was seemingly lost at Chelsea.
Obviously, we are very early into the season, so it is hard to judge how a player is doing, but you can get to know fairly early on if a player is suiting his new club.
It seems Ampadu is definitely doing that at Elland Road, as he’s already set the marker with his performances.
The 23-year-old has started and finished all 12 of Leeds’ games so far in the Championship, and that run is expected to continue when they face Stoke City on Wednesday night.
The midfielder has yet to get off the mark in front of goal, but he has been performing very well in the midfield, as he’s brought a sense of calmness and experience to the area.
He has become a trusted member of Farke’s side, and with him playing every minute so far, it shows that he is doing something right.
Ampadu has struggled throughout his career to find a home for a sustained period of time, but he will now be hoping Leeds is that place.
Ampadu has been performing for Leeds and his country Wales and now former Wales international Robbie Savage has given TEAMtalk his thoughts on Leeds’ signing of Ampadu and why he’s the best signing of the summer transfer window.
He told TEAMtalk: “Ethan Ampadu – I am a huge fan of his.
“He’s been out on loan a few times, but now he’s got his permanent move to Leeds and I think for the money they paid – and £7m is the figure suggested – it’s an absolute bargain for Leeds United – one of the signings of the season. The way Daniel Farke wants to play is perfect to get the best out of him.
“I know he plays in that defensive midfield role with the likes of Glen Kamara and Archie Gray to compliment him, so the dynamic of that midfield drives them forward.
“Amapdu’s taken that form into the international scene with Wales. His performance against Croatia was absolutely terrific. As a No 6, he more than held his own against Kovacic and Modric – some truly fantastic players – and he was the best player on the park.
“So listen, Ampadu and Leeds United are perfect for one another. Leeds United are a fantastic football club, a big football club, passionate fanbase and they’re third in the Championship with a real opportunity of bouncing back.
“But for Ethan Ampadu, to be playing regular football, not only will it benefit him, but it’ll also benefit Wales and most of all, Leeds United. So at £7m, you’ve got to say so far, he’s one of the bargains of the season.”
Leeds have every chance of returning to the Premier League at the end of this season, and if they do manage to pull promotion off, then you can expect Ampadu to have been at the heart of it.
The midfielder is going to be a very key player for the club this season and in the years to come, and it seems that if he is available, he is going to play.
The more games he keeps playing, the better Ampadu is going to get, so if Leeds are going to be successful this season, then you can put Ampadu in the category of players they need to keep fit, as he is crucial to what they can achieve this season.
