On Friday, Real Madrid announced that they had completed the signing of Franco Mastantuono from River Plate in Argentina.

The 17-year-old attacking midfield prodigy became the Merengues’ third summer signing, following the arrivals of Dean Huijsen and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Mastantuono has signed a six-year contract with Real Madrid and will link up with the club in August after representing River Plate at the FIFA Club World Cup.

Payment structure revealed

As revealed yesterday by River Plate in their official statement, Real Madrid have had to shell out a massive €63.2 million to sign Mastantuono, with the sum including the relevant taxes and other costs.

Of the €63.2 million, a sum of €45 million will go to River Plate – which happened to be the figure of the youngster’s release clause.

Now, speaking to Juan Cortese of TyC Sports, River Plate president Jorge Brito has revealed that Real Madrid will be paying the €45 million fee in three instalments.

“The money for Franco Mastantuono will be paid by Real Madrid in three installments. €20 million net now, €12.5 million in June 2026 and €12.5 million in June 2027,” he revealed.

Mastantuono wished to stay until the end of the year

Brito then went on to urge River Plate fans to direct any anger over Mastantuono’s exit directly at him and not the player, saying:

“Whoever is angry about this, let it be with me,” he said.

The River Plate president revealed that efforts were made to try and keep the teenager at the club until the end of the year, but it was not possible.

“We weren’t able to achieve our goal of keeping Franco Mastantuono until the end of the year. Real Madrid reached the point where they were like, ‘It’s this or nothing,'” he said.

“The way it materialized was through a clause executed by the player in agreement with the club, which is why the instalments appear.”

Brito also stated that even Mastantuono tried hard to remain at River Plate until December, as he said:

“Franco Mastantuono made every effort to stay until the end of the year, he tried until the last minute. He helped River Plate create pressure to stay, and I can’t deny that. We always found a willingness, because he loves River.”
