Manchester United in a three-way battle for Declan Rice

According to The Athletic (h/t Football.london), Manchester United and Manchester City are plotting to make a move for West Ham United star Declan Rice this summer.

The English international is currently with the Three Lions squad for this summer’s Euros. Gareth Southgate’s side kick off their campaign by taking on Croatia on Sunday.

Rice has been one of the Premier League’s best young midfielders. He played a key role in West Ham qualifying for the Europa League last season.

Both the Manchester sides may have been given an advantage thanks to Chelsea’s transfer stance. While the Blues are keen on Rice, their current priorities lie elsewhere. This could pave the way for United or City to make their move.

Pep Guardiola’s side are also chasing a striker to replace Sergio Aguero and have been linked with the likes of Erling Haaland and Harry Kane. Neither player will come cheap, meaning United could potentially outbid them for Rice.

It is no secret that United need a centre-back this summer. Rice can do a job in the position while also excelling as a defensive midfielder. His versatility could make him a key part of a young and upcoming United side.

A major drawback could however prove to be West Ham’s asking price. David Moyes admitted last month that Rice would cost upwards of £100m. This will not just comfortably break our transfer record but also put a severe strain on our transfer kitty.

The Red Devils could however lower that price by offering Jesse Lingard in exchange. Whether that is something the Hammers will be receptive to remains debatable.
