Gareth Ainsworth is adamant that Sheffield Wednesday will win League One after they beat his Wycombe Wanderers side on Saturday.

The Owls currently trail Plymouth in the table, whilst big-spending Ipswich are also in contention for an automatic promotion place, in a race that promises to go down to the wire.

However, speaking after a Will Vaulks goal beat Wycombe, Ainsworth told the Sheffield Star that Darren Moore’s side are the best they have come up against this season.

They are an unbelievable team, they are an outstanding side, and they deserve to currently sit second. Wednesday had a lot of respect for us, and we lost narrowly to the champions of League One this season.

Anyone that finishes above Wednesday will win the league this year. I don’t see anyone finishing above them, so for us, it was a great performance.”

Moore’s men are back in action against Fleetwood Town this weekend and they will hope to continue their fine form on their own patch.

They are currently four points clear of the third-placed Tractor Boys.

The verdict

This is nice for Wednesday to hear as Ainsworth is obviously a manager who knows what it takes to be successful at this level and he’s clearly impressed by Moore’s side.

Of course, praise counts for little but it shows the team are doing everything right and you can understand why Ainsworth is confident in the Owls because they are a pretty complete side who can play good football but also mix it up.

But, Plymouth and Ipswich will have something to say about his claim and it promises to be a brilliant run-in for the neutrals.
