Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand is expecting Chelsea to take back control of the Premier League from Liverpool and Manchester City by winning it next season.

Ferdinand is backing Chelsea to win the division now Thomas Tuchel has arrived and improved them in multiple categories. He points out how they are top of most statistics in the division since Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard at the helm.

Assuming Manchester City win it this season, Liverpool and City will have won each of their last four Premier League titles, with Ferdinand believing Chelsea will end their dominance.

Speaking on his own YouTube channel, as transcribed by Caught Offside, Rio Ferdinand explained why he thinks Chelsea will win the league. “Have you seen Chelsea’s stats by the way? Chelsea are my team to win the league next year.

“Since Tuchel has come in, they are top of almost every category: goals conceded, chances created. What he’s done going in there, you can do nothing but give him applause man. It’s unbelievable.

“Werner will bang. Werner will bang next year. It’s his first year in the country. People are forgetting he’s settling in – during a pandemic by the way. This isn’t the easiest settling-in period.”

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

As Ferdinand explains, the job Tuchel has done since joining Chelsea has been phenomenal. The German coach has lifted them up into the top four, seven points clear of Liverpool as it stands, and has qualified for the FA Cup and Champions League finals, which are both set to be played later this month. This means that they could end the campaign with two major trophies and head into next season full of confidence and ready to compete for the title.

Liverpool, meanwhile, are struggling to qualify for the Champions League and have been knocked out of every cup competition. This shows that they have had a very difficult season and Jurgen Klopp could have a job on his hands to turn the mentality around before next season. Klopp will need to get all of his players back fit, along with potential summer recruits, and make sure that they are all prepared to have a proper crack at winning the title this season to show that the 2019/20 campaign was not a one-off.

Therefore, we can understand Ferdinand’s reasoning and Chelsea do appear to be very strong with Tuchel in charge at Stamford Bridge. The Blues could provide stern competition to the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City, Leicester and Manchester United next season, with a clutch of clubs at the top of the table potentially eyeing up a title run next season.
