Rio Ferdinand thinks Arsenal will go on to win the Premier League with the former Manchester United defender insisting the title race is over.

The Gunners are currently five points clear of the second-placed Manchester City with a game in hand, while they are a further six points ahead of Newcastle United and Man Utd, who occupy the other two Champions League spots.

Arsenal still have to face Man City twice before the end of the season in the league with many seeing that as City’s main route to the top – but Ferdinand reckons the Gunners will still win the title even if the Citizens win both those fixtures.

“I think it’s a wrap,” Ferdinand said on his Vibe with FIVE YouTube channel. “I’ve got to be honest, I do.

“No matter what results Arsenal get against Man City, I still think Arsenal have enough confidence, quality and calmness to take the title.”

Ferdinand’s former team-mate Patrice Evra is also tipping Arsenal to emerge victorious in the title race.

“Even if Man City beat Arsenal in both matches in the Premier League, they still have a chance of winning the title if they are strong mentally,” Evra told Betfair.

“I don’t agree with Roy Keane and Gary Neville, I don’t think City will win the league, I think Arsenal will win. The way they are playing consistently, I don’t see that with City.

“I feel like Guardiola is still looking for something, that perfect combination. When you have a team like Arsenal, desperate to win the league, you can’t waste any time.

“City are City and if I was Arsenal I’d prefer it if it was another team chasing them down. You have to respect City and be careful of them.”

Just two weeks ago, Paul Merson was predicting that Arsenal are still “a long way off being title contenders”

“Arsenal have done amazingly but they are a long way off being title contenders, in my opinion,” Merson told Sky Sports. “Just look at that Newcastle game. They couldn’t bring anybody on when they needed to change it.

“There’s nobody on the bench bar Fabio Vieira, who Mikel Arteta paid £34m for and doesn’t seem to trust. Then, two days after that game, Man City are looking like they might draw against Chelsea, but they just bring on Grealish and Mahrez and one crosses it, one scores.

“That showed the quality Pep Guardiola has to work with and I just don’t see how Arsenal are going to be able to live with Man City over a period where there are 60-odd points up for grabs. Arsenal would have to take four points off Man City in those two games to have absolutely any chance of winning it. Otherwise, I just don’t see how Arsenal are going to do it.”
