Rio Ferdinand asks has Sancho upset Southgate behind the scenes

Rio Ferdinand is baffled at Jadon Sancho not playing a minute of England’s first two games at Euro 2020.

The Borussia Dortmund winger, who is being closely linked to Manchester United this summer, did not even make the bench for last week’s win over Croatia.

He made the bench as England bottled their chance to beat Scotland – instead drawing 0-0, with much credit to Scott McTominay and his Scottish team-mates.

Rahaeem Sterling stayed on the pitch for 90 minutes, ending the game on the right side of the England attack, and Marcus Rashford played centrally for the final 20 minutes.

Gareth Southgate stuck with a double pivot of Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips but did introduce Jack Grealish before the end, but the Three Lions were still unable to break the deadlock.

Ferdinand had predicted an easy win for England, but it wasn’t to be.

He told his Five YouTube channel: “The substitutions, I thought they were poor.

“You can make a lot of substitutions now, he only made two substitutions when you can make five.

“Utilise that bench, that’s what it’s there for. We’ve got all these players. Sancho? What’s he done? He must have done something behind the scenes.

“He [Sancho] for the last three seasons has the second most goal involvements in this England squad after Sterling and Harry Kane.”

This is not only a player on the verge of a mega-money transfer to United, Sancho managed 16 goals and 20 assists in all competitions last season but somehow appears to be way down Southgate’s pecking order.

Southgate has been guilty of not knowing his best eleven going into the Euros, even with Harry Maguire out injured – Tyrone Mings has been a good replacement.
