Ringo Meerveld was the subject of strong interest from Feyenoord in January. However, the move never transpired, despite the Rotterdam side offering Willem II around two and a half million euros. The new Heerenveen player has now looked back on that time with no ill feelings.
As VI’s Bart Kruijt asserts, the 22-year-old Meerveld was one of the sensations of the Eredivisie in the first half of last season, and Feyenoord were eager to sign him. However, the difference in valuations from what Willem II wanted was far too great.
That was, of course, a disappointment for Meerveld, but he quickly got over it. “Because I was so confident at that point… If I keep going like this for another six months, just imagine what kind of clubs will come along! Yeah, that’s what I thought. But after five or six games after the winter break, that feeling changed a bit.”
The second half of the season went downhill for both Meerveld and Willem II, who were ultimately relegated from the Eredivisie. This signalled the creative midfielder’s time to move on. However, with key acquisitions of their own, Feyenoord were no longer interested in him.
Heerenveen eventually snapped him up. Incidentally, for a significantly lower fee than what Feyenoord were willing to pay in January.
“I never think about what could have been. There’s no point in it at all. Of course, January was tough; I think every player would want to go to a top-three club, but the world of football is incredibly tough, and that’s a long way behind me now. I’m very happy with Heerenveen, which is a fantastic step forward for me. I’m looking forward to performing well here and will do everything I can to make it a success.”
