Champions League football returned in north London on Wednesday night as Tottenham took on Marseille.
It had been over two years since their majestic arena had seen Europe’s premier competition grace its grass, so the Spurs faithful will be overjoyed to have come away with the three points.
It was a relatively closely-fought affair, with the away team looking reasonably settled until Chancel Mbemba was sent off for denying Son Heung-min a clear goal scoring opportunity just after half-time.
So it took well over an hour for Antonio Conte’s men to find the initial breakthrough, scoring in the 76th minute courtesy of a Richarlison header.
The Brazilian latched onto a lovely Ivan Perisic cross and converted for his first goal in the Spurs white.
Just five minutes later and Richarlison added his second with another bullet header that went in off the post.
Ruthlessly dispatched doesn’t quite do that finish enough justice. Spectacular stuff from Richarlison.
Performances like the one he put in tonight are exactly why Conte forked out £60 million for the former Everton man, who despite only scoring his first goal today, seems to be settling in brilliantly to his new surroundings.
Upon signing for Spurs, Richarlison said: “I always said that my dream was to play in the Champions League and now that dream will come true.”
Well, Richarlison, come true it did and now you’ve got yourself two game-winning goals in your debut appearance.
It was visible to everyone in the stadium what it meant to Richarlison after the full-time whistle.
He went over to greet his close family in the stands and could be seen tearing up with the emotion of the moment.
It made for some pretty special viewing and will surely endear the 25-year-old to Spurs supporters even further.

Players with that kind of burning desire and love for the game are exactly what Conte adores working with.
And in a summer that has seen Spurs splash the cash on several high-profile stars, we get the feeling that the signing of Richarlison could prove the pick of the bunch at this rate.
What a player.
