Everton’s chances of retaining top-flight football for next season are precariously balanced, so three goals and a red card in their first 45-minutes against Brentford will have fans chomping on their fingernails.

The hosts got off to a flying start as the returning Dominic Calvert-Lewin got the faintest of touches to help divert Richarlison’s effort after 10-minutes.

Their joy was short-lived though as Jarrad Branthwaite was shown a straight red card for bringing down Ivan Toney. Brentford took the ascendancy and deservedly drew level through a Séamus Coleman own-goal in the 37th-minute.

Against the run of play, and with the tension in the air rising, Everton were awarded a penalty for a foul on Richarlison who cooly converted to give the hosts the lead again.

This surely won’t be the final twist in the tale of this enthralling Premier League relegation battle.
