América midfielder Richard Sánchez has refused to stoke the fires of the Clásico Joven rivalry ahead of the Apertura play-offs.
Rodrigo Huesca, a winger with Cruz Azul, made headlines this week when he spoke of wanting revenge on the Azulcrema for a humiliating 7-0 regular season defeat in August.
Speaking at a press conference in the build-up to Cruz’s Repechaje clash with León on Sunday, Huesca said: “We have that desire to play against América to turn the page, because we still have that thorn.
“We want revenge and what better than pay the one who did it to us.”
Asked about those comments, Sánchez told the W Deportes radio station: “The truth is that we think in a different way.
“Everyone knows that off the field it is not good to start talking. Being on the field is different. It is to be 11 v 11 and compete, the result speaks for itself.”
América finished top of the Apertura table and will be heavy favourites to beat whoever they end up meeting in next week’s Liguilla quarter-finals.
